- 49ERS RELEASE STRUGGLING KICKER DAVID AKERS -

As expected, the San Francisco 49ers announced they have released K David Akers, the team’s official website is reporting. His 2012 season began by booting a record-tying 63-yard field goal off the crossbar at Lambeau Field. His season has ended by being booted off the roster. “The 49ers would like to thank David for his service, dedication and leadership over the past two years,” 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke said. “He is a true professional who represented himself and this organization with class. We wish him, and his family, all the best.” Akers signed with the 49ers in 2011 after 12 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. He set a franchise record with 166 points in his first year in San Francisco. A 14-year NFL veteran, Akers has played in 221 games and connected on 367 of 453 field goal attempts and 521 of 527 PATs for 1,622 career points. He is a six-time Pro Bowler and four-time Associated Press All-Pro. Because he was released, he instantly becomes a free agent, able to sign with any other team. (Photo: 49ers.com)
